What is a GPS Running Watch?

01/31/2014 02:24
If you are not into sports and fitness you might be confused when you hear someone associate GPS with a running watch. GPS stands for global positioning system and is generally used to give you map information and tell you where to go. You can usually find a GPS in your car, or as a separate unit that goes on sale a lot during the holidays. So what happens when you combine the two together?

Well a GPS running watch does not give you maps and tell you where to go, rather it works in the opposite direction from that. Instead of telling you where to go it maps where you have been and how fast and far you have traveled. They can work with walking, running and some models work with biking as well. They can map out the location and how many laps were run and send that information to your home computer so you can track it. These are durable watches that are water resistant on average of fifty meters. This is good since if you are running, chances are you are probably going to be sweating.

Some of the great features that can be found on a GPS running watch include your basic time telling piece as well as stopwatch, workout program, and distance tracking. They can track heart rate, and some models will even work well in the pool so you can track your swim time and laps in the pool as well.

Each model is different of course and some will have basic button features to access everything while others are built with a touch screen model similar to a phone. As the models have improved over the years, your GPS running watch should still work in shaded areas such as around tall buildings and trees.
